    About

    The photography of William Kim.

I started p h o t o b l o g because the size of photos on Facebook is too small and on Flickr even smaller.  I am a lawyer hoping that the GFC and its inevitable squeeze on my employment will mean I can pursue my dream of becoming a National Geographic photographer that I’ve had ever since I started working as a lawyer.  Photography is a hobby to me.  As it is for many people with a digital camera and a computer.  Only that I’ve spent too much money on it to give it up as a passing fad.  My mother studied art and hoped to be an artist before marrying my father.  My sister studied ceramics in New York.  Growing up, a family excursion involved driving to Canberra to see a Monet exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia.  Standing in front of Bords de la Marne the other day, I punched the air when I found out that the Art Gallery of New South Wales purchased the Cézanne for $16m in 2008.  Naturally I thought art was in my genes and that photography was the most practical conduit for my creative expression.  Oil painting leaves my apartment smelling of linseed oil and turpentine.  Therefore I take photos.  Mostly to express myself.  Sometimes to tell a story.  Hardly because I am any good at it (but I’m trying).

Some years ago I faced a crisis in my life.  Particularly in relation to the philosophy with which I live it.  Which involved a critical and open-minded examination of the testimony of a man named Jesus contained in the primary source, the Bible.  Confronted with the question, “is this man Lord, lunatic or liar?” my entire Reason and my Faith lead me to the conclusion he is Lord and the same God as the Father.  I live each day with a deep, overwhelming sense of joy knowing that I am created, free and redeemed.  I walk, therefore, with wide-eyed wonderment, thankful for Life and this perceptual experience we call Beauty.  And I hope, in capturing some fragment of this Beauty through the lens of my camera, I better understand with what pleasure God sees his creation.

    Soli Deo gloria
